Apples are delicious fruits that have many health benefits and can be grown in different climates. , I will share with you some tips and advice on how to plant, care for, and harvest apples in Uganda, as well as where to get quality seedlings and how to market your produce.

##

Apples are temperate fruits that require a certain amount of chilling hours (the number of hours below 7°C) to break dormancy and produce flowers and fruits. However, some apple varieties have been developed to adapt to warmer climates and lower chilling requirements. These are called low-chill or tropical apples. Two of the most popular low-chill apple varieties that can be grown in Uganda are **Golden Dorset** and **Anna**.

- **GOLDEN DORSET**

is a yellow-skinned apple with a sweet and crisp flesh. It is an early-season variety that ripens in June or July. It has a low chilling requirement of about 100 hours.

- **ANNA**

is a green-skinned apple with a red blush and a sweet and tart flavor. It is also an early-season variety that ripens in June or July. It has a very low chilling requirement of about 50 hours.

Both Golden Dorset and Anna are self-fertile, meaning they do not need another apple variety to pollinate them. However, cross-pollination can improve fruit quality and yield. Therefore, it is recommended to plant both varieties together or with other low-chill apple varieties such as Ein Shemer, Tropical Beauty, or Tropic Sweet.

## How to Plant Apples in Uganda

To plant apples in Uganda, you will need to prepare the soil, choose the right site, obtain quality seedlings from CLOVER-GREEN Nurseries & Landscaping Ug and follow the proper planting techniques.

### Soil Preparation

Apples prefer well-drained, fertile, and slightly acidic soil with a pH of 6.0 to 6.5. To prepare the soil for planting, you will need to do the following steps:

- Clear the land of weeds, rocks, and debris.
- Dig holes of about 60 cm by 60 cm by 60 cm at least one month before planting.
- Mix the topsoil with organic matter such as compost or manure at a ratio of 1:1.
- Fill the holes with the soil mixture and leave them to settle for a few weeks.

### Site Selection

Apples need plenty of sunlight and air circulation to grow well and avoid diseases. Therefore, you should choose a site that has the following characteristics:

1 - It is exposed to at least six hours of direct sunlight per day.
2 - It is elevated or sloped to allow good drainage and prevent waterlogging.
3 - It is protected from strong winds and frost by natural or artificial barriers such as trees or fences.
4 - It is away from sources of pests and diseases such as other fruit trees or crops.

### Seedling Selection

To ensure a successful apple production, you should obtain quality seedlings from reputable nurseries or suppliers. You can get certified apple seedlings from **CLOVER-GREEN Nurseries & Landscaping Ug**, which is located in Kawanda Nkokonjeru, Central Region, Uganda. They offer healthy and vigorous apple seedlings of Golden Dorset, Anna, and other low-chill varieties at affordable prices. You can contact them at **+256756617920** or email them at **gardenersofuganda@gmail.com** for more information.

### Planting Techniques

To plant your apple seedlings, you should follow these steps:

- Plant your seedlings during the rainy season, preferably at the beginning of the rain
- Space your seedlings at least 4 meters apart within rows and 6 meters apart between rows.
- Remove the polythene bag from the seedling and gently loosen the root ball.
- Place the seedling in the center of the hole and make sure the graft union (the point where the rootstock and the scion are joined) is above the soil level.
- Fill the hole with the remaining soil mixture and press firmly around the base of the seedling.
- Water the seedling thoroughly and apply mulch around it to conserve moisture and prevent weed growth.

## HOW TO CARE FOR APPLES IN UGANDA

To care for your apple trees, you will need to provide them with adequate water, fertilizer, pruning, pest and disease control, and thinning.

Watering

Apples need regular watering during the first year of establishment and during dry periods. You should water your trees once or twice a week, depending on the weather conditions and soil moisture. You can use drip irrigation, sprinklers, or buckets to water your trees. Avoid overwatering or underwatering your trees, as this can cause root rot or drought stress.

Fertilizing

Apples need balanced and timely fertilization to support their growth and fruiting. You should apply organic or inorganic fertilizers according to the soil test results and the age and size of your trees. A general recommendation is to apply 10 grams of NPK 17:17:17 per tree per month during the first year, and increase the amount by 10 grams every year until the sixth year. You should also apply 5 kilograms of farmyard manure per tree per year. You should apply the fertilizers in a circular band around the drip line of the tree, and avoid placing them near the trunk or the roots. You should also water your trees after fertilizing them to dissolve and distribute the nutrients.

Pruning

Pruning is the process of removing unwanted branches or shoots from your apple trees to improve their shape, size, health, and productivity. You should prune your apple trees once a year, preferably in August or September, before the flowering season. You should remove any dead, diseased, damaged, or crossing branches, as well as any suckers or water sprouts that grow from the base or the trunk of the tree. You should also thin out any overcrowded or competing branches to allow light and air to penetrate the canopy. You should use sharp and clean pruning tools and make clean and smooth cuts at an angle away from the bud or branch collar. You should also disinfect your tools between each cut to prevent spreading diseases.

### PEST AND DISEASE CONTROL

Apples are susceptible to various pests and diseases that can reduce their quality and yield. Some of the common pests and diseases that affect apples in Uganda are:

- **APHIDS**: These are small, soft-bodied insects that suck the sap from the leaves and shoots of apple trees. They can cause curling, yellowing, and distortion of the leaves, as well as reduced growth and fruiting. They can also transmit viral diseases such as apple mosaic virus.

- **CODLING MOTH**: This is a small, gray-brown moth that lays eggs on the surface of apple fruits. The larvae hatch and bore into the fruits, feeding on the flesh and seeds. They can cause extensive damage and spoilage of the fruits, as well as entry points for fungal infections.

- **APPLE SCAB**: This is a fungal disease that causes dark brown or black spots on the leaves and fruits of apple trees. It can reduce photosynthesis, fruit quality, and yield. It can also cause premature leaf fall and fruit drop.

- **FIRE BLIGHT**: This is a bacterial disease that causes wilting, browning, and dying of the flowers, shoots, and branches of apple trees. It can spread rapidly and kill entire trees if not controlled. It can also infect other fruit trees such as pears and quinces.

To control these pests and diseases, you should use a combination of cultural, biological, and chemical methods. Some of the recommended practices are:

- Monitor your trees regularly for any signs of pest or disease infestation.
- Use resistant or tolerant varieties such as Golden Dorset, Anna or tropical sweet form CLOVER-GREEN Nurseries & Landscaping Ug

- Maintain good sanitation and hygiene by removing any fallen leaves, fruits, or pruned branches from your orchard.

- Encourage natural enemies such as ladybugs, lacewings, or parasitic wasps that feed on aphids or codling moth larvae.

- Use traps such as pheromone traps or sticky traps to capture adult codling moths or other flying insects.

- Use organic or synthetic pesticides such as neem oil, pyrethrum, or carbaryl to spray your trees when pest or disease pressure is high. Follow the label instructions carefully and avoid spraying during flowering or fruiting stages.

- Use fungicides such as copper oxychloride or mancozeb to spray your trees when fungal disease risk is high. Follow the label instructions carefully and avoid spraying during flowering or fruiting stages.

- Use bactericides such as streptomycin or oxytetracycline to spray your trees when fire blight risk is high. Follow the label instructions carefully and avoid spraying during flowering or fruiting stages.

### Thinning

Thinning is the process of removing excess fruits from your apple trees to improve their size, quality, and uniformity. Thinning can also prevent biennial bearing (the tendency of some apple varieties to produce a heavy crop one year and a light crop the next year) by reducing stress on the tree. You should thin your apple fruits when they are about 2 to 3 cm in diameter, which is usually about 4 to 6 weeks after flowering. You should remove any damaged, diseased, misshapen, or poorly positioned fruits. Can also call for help services from the gardenersofuganda

BEST HERBICIDES, PESTICIDES, FUNGICIDES AND FERTILIZERS

The best fertilizer and pesticides and fungicides for apples in Uganda depend on several factors, such as the soil type, the apple variety, the disease and pest pressure, and the environmental conditions. However, here are some general recommendations based on my experience and research for over ten years

For fertilizer, you should use a high-phosphorus fruit tree fertilizer every three months during the growing season. You can also mix compost or well-rotted manure to enrich your growing medium. You can also add some blood, fish and bone meal for good root establishmen.

For pesticides, you should use neem oil, horticultural oil, insecticidal soap, or pyrethrum spray to control most of the pests that affect apple trees, such as aphids, mites, scale insects, caterpillars, and fruit flies. You can also use sticky traps, netting, or bagging to prevent fruit damage1.

For fungicides, you should choose a product that is effective against the diseases that are common in your area, such as apple scab, bitter rot, black rot, fire blight, powdery mildew, rusts, and sooty blotch.

You should also follow the label instructions for the amount and frequency of application. Some of the fungicides that are recommended for apple trees are:

Captan: a contact fungicide that is good for apple scab, bitter rot, black rot, calyx-end rot, flyspeck, sooty blotch, and white rot.

Mancozeb: a contact fungicide that is good for apple scab, bitter rot, black rot, calyx-end rot, rusts, and white rot.

Ziram: a contact fungicide that is good for apple scab, bitter rot, black rot, rusts, sooty blotch, and white rot.

Sulfur: a contact fungicide that is fair for apple scab, bitter rot, powdery mildew, rusts, and sooty blotch.

Copper: a contact fungicide that is good for fire blight and fair for apple scab.

Streptomycin: a systemic fungicide that is best for fire blight.

Indar: a systemic fungicide that is best for apple scab and good for flyspeck and sooty blotch.

Inspire Super: a systemic fungicide that is best for apple scab and good for flyspeck and sooty blotch2.

Merivon: a systemic fungicide that is best for apple scab, bitter rot, black rot, calyx-end rot, flyspeck, powdery mildew, sooty blotch2.

Pristine: a systemic fungicide that is best for apple scab, bitter rot, black rot, calyx-end rot, flyspeck, powdery mildew, sooty blotch

HEALTHY BENEFITS OF APPLES

Apples are one of the most popular and nutritious fruits in the world. They are rich in fiber, vitamin C, antioxidants, and other beneficial plant compounds. Eating apples regularly may have several health benefits for Ugandans, such as:

Lowering the risk of heart disease and stroke. Apples contain soluble fiber, which can help lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Soluble fiber also helps prevent plaque buildup in the arteries, which can lead to atherosclerosis and heart attacks

A study found that eating two apples a day lowered LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglyceride levels in healthy adults.

Another study found that eating apples or pears was associated with a 52% lower risk of stroke.

Supporting weight loss and preventing obesity. Apples are high in water and fiber, which make them filling and satisfying. Eating whole apples can increase the feeling of fullness more than drinking apple juice or eating apple sauce. This can help reduce calorie intake and promote weight loss. Apples also contain polyphenols, which may have anti-obesity effects by influencing the metabolism of fat and sugar.

Improving gut health and digestion. Apples are a good source of prebiotic fiber, which feeds the beneficial bacteria in the gut. These bacteria help maintain a healthy balance of microorganisms in the digestive system, which can improve immunity, mood, and metabolism. Apples also contain pectin, a type of soluble fiber that can help relieve constipation and diarrhea.

Protecting against diabetes and cancer. Apples have a low glycemic index, which means they do not cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels after eating. This can help prevent or manage diabetes by improving insulin sensitivity and glucose regulation. Apples also contain antioxidants and phytochemicals that can protect against oxidative stress and inflammation, which are linked to various types of cancer. A review of studies found that apple consumption was associated with a lower risk of lung, breast, colorectal, and esophageal cancer.

As you can see, apples are not only delicious but also very beneficial for your health. You can enjoy them as a snack, add them to salads or oatmeal, bake them into pies or muffins, or blend them into smoothies. Just remember to eat them with the skin on, as it contains most of the fiber and antioxidants. To get the most out of apples, choose organic ones if possible, or wash them well before eating to remove any pesticides or wax.
